Portugal ready for Drogba's appearan

Associated Press

Port Elizabeth: Portugal coach Carlos Quieroz is making plans to deal with an unlikely appearance by Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba in the teams' World Cup opener on Tuesday.

Drogba seemed to be out of the World Cup after breaking his arm in a warmup June 4, but has been receiving intensive treatment and may take to the field wearing a special protective cast.

Such an outcome sounds far-fetched, but Quieroz says "after 30 years of my life in soccer, there is nothing that surprises me."

Drogba is Ivory Coast's main hope for goals in a tough Group G that also contains five-time world champion Brazil and North Korea.

Ivory Coast coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has yet to say if Drogba is fit enough to play.
