Click to play videoMumbai: Remaking a much-loved classic is never easy. Next in line after Don are the makers of the new Umrao Jaan who will inevitably face comparisons with the original Rekha starrer.
"I'm not really bothered by it. If people want to compare the film then that's their prerogative but on JP saab's part he never set out to make a remake. He just made an adaptation of the book," actor, Abhishek Bachchan said.
Dutta for his part says making Umrao Jaan was the realisation of a long-cherished dream. It was a personal victory for the filmmaker to complete this project, which was an undertaking his father had embarked on years ago but never managed to complete it.
"I made this film because I had given my word to my father way back in 1980's. He had actually started the film with yesteryear’s actress Nimmi," Dutta said.
Filmmaker Muzaffar Ali's 1981 film, an adaptation of Mirza Haadi Ruswa's novel, Umrao Jaan Ada, is justifiably considered a musical masterpiece and those associated with the remake are hopeful their own compositions will match upto Khayyam's score in the original film.
"There are many mujras in this film but they all are an integral part of the film. All the songs are part of the narrative. The songs manage to convey what the dialogues cannot," lyricist, Javed Akhtar explained.
"It was tough for me to compose songs because I had to keep in mind the royal ambience and sounds of that bygone era," music director, Anu Malik said.
With Aishwarya's scintillating dance sequences and Abhishek's brooding act, the makers are hoping the film serenades its way into people's hearts.
So, will the final product be a film that will be immortalised in history like Muzaffar Ali's original was? It's a question that'll be answered on November 3 when Umrao Jaan opens at cinemas across the country.
