New Delhi: It is Navratri season and time to dig into all your favourite potato treats, but wait!
If onion prices made you cry earlier, it's potatoes that will slice a hole in your wallet. With preparations made from potatoes a staple for those on fast, the retail price of potatoes has almost doubled this season.
Delhi's demand for potatoes is up from 15 lakh kilograms to nearly 25 kilograms a day. That's why, what cost you Rs 15 last week, now comes for Rs 30.
And consumers are feeling the pinch. A housewife in Delhi said, “We are middleclass, how can we afford it.” While another resident of the Capital said, “the rates are too high, we are going to complain.”
So what's causing the price hike?
“Less rain is one reason. Then crop from Punjab and Maharashtra has been less. Demand is too much in this season so obviously prices will rise,” a shopkeeper Neeraj Kumar said.
But cities rich in potato production aren't feeling the heat as badly as Delhi.
In Mumbai and Chandigarh, potatoes are still in the range of Rs 17 to 18. Although, in Hyderabad, prices have shot up to Rs 21 per kilogram.
It seems you will have to bear with the rise in potato prices till the end of the Navratri season. Come November and the onset of a new crop, the prices are expected to bounce back to normal.
