Power crisis generates public ire

New Delhi: Summertime power crisis is an annual problem in the Capital and like many others, Dr Sandeep Sharma, is upset over it.

A resident of Safdurjung enclave in New Delhi, Dr Sharma complains that his locality was without electricity for almost six hours on Tuesday morning.

Despite repeated complaints to the BSES helpline, there hasn't been any help. He wants to know why the government wasn't prepared with a solution, before summer set in.

"It is really surprising that every time the government and the officials say that it is due to the shortfall that we do not get electricity. Why is it that the government is not working on it?", questions Dr Sandeep Sharma, a consultant.

He says that the power crisis occurs every summer, and yet the government has turned a blind eye to it. "Why can't they foresee all these things?," he says.

With a 600 Megawatt (MW) shortage of power, the Capital is struggling to cope with the power crisis.

"Because of the annual shut down of four power plants and the indiscipline in the northern grid, Uttar Pradesh was over-drawing power. This has forced us to go for road checking," reasons Power Minister of Delhi, Haroon Yusuf.

Delhi has managed to get around 150 MW of power from Himachal Pradesh, and 210 MW is expected from Dadri in the coming weeks. But the Capital's power generating units are not running to their full capacity.

While Delhi's installed capacity is 1,700 MW, the city generates only 1,200 MW. Delhi's share from the northern grid is around 2,000 MW, but to keep up with the demand pressure, sometimes the state has to overdraw 200-400 MW.

Dr Sharma's grouse with the government represents the discomfiture of a million other citizens of Delhi who are struggling with the power shortage. The governemnt is answerable to the people and they need to find an effective solution now.
