Power slips out of Soren's hands yet again

New Delhi: Shibu Soren's luck deserted him yet again as the Jharkhand chief minister lost the Tamar assembly bypoll by 9,000 votes on Thursday.

For Soren, who was sworn in as chief minister in late August, this was his battle for survival. The constitution required him to win an Assembly seat within six months.

After this defeat, it is impossible for him to be elected before the deadline of end-February. Soren, however, is still hopeful.

“I will be meeting with Sonia Gandhi and Lalu Yadav before deciding on my future course of action,” he said.

Soren's political career has seen some dramatic reverses in the past five years...

He joined the UPA Cabinet in 2004 but had to quit after a criminal warrant against him. He returned to the Cabinet in October 2004 only to give it up again within five months. He was sworn as the chief minister of the Jharkhand government for twelve days and became a Central minister again in 2006 only to be convicted in the Jha murder case

After being acquitted by the High court, he became Jharkhand CM in August 2008

Soren with Lok Sabha MPs had supported the Manmohan Singh government during the trust vote last year. He bargained hard in the process. And as a quid pro quo became the Jharkhand CM in the process.

The Congress, of course, doesn't want to back him any longer. Even Lalu, who takes great interest in Jharkhand politics because of the fodder scam cases pending in Ranchi High Court is maintaining a stoic silence.

Soren may not be able to prevent President's rule in Jharkhand.
