Praful Patel says lay offs not his problem

New Delhi: Jet Airways Chairman Naresh Goyal has admitted that the Domestic Civil Aviation industry is facing a crisis and appealed to the Government help the domestic airlines. This on a day when Jet has laid off 1,900 employees.

However, Civil Aviation Minister, Praful Patel has washed his hands saying his ministry has no jurisdiction on the matter.

He said, "India's aviation market has evolved. The slowdown has come in the last few months and the main reason for the slowdown was the hike in fuel prices. International prices went up at the same time that domestic oil companies were hiking prices. There has been a very strict taxation regime in our country, which has resulted in this crisis."

"Human Resource issues are governed by the different authorities so I do not think that as Minister of Civil Aviation, I can take a decision and give any directive to HR issues because they are governed by by different agencies," he added.

Meanwhile, not one to be left behind, the Shiv Sena is throwing its weight behind the protesting employees of Jet Airways.

Sena activists assembled outside Jet House in Mumbai and started shouting slogans at the domestic carrier for laying off employees in a massive retrenchment operation. Bot the Shiv Sena and its nemesis, Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, have been jostling with each other to build a base among the youth in Mumbai.
