Thirty-five maulvis in militancy-affected Rajouri, Poonch and Doda have been selected for the peace mission and they are sure they will succeed.
"This effort will definitely bring about a change," says Mohammad Farid, a maulvi from village Mandi in Rajouri and the leader of the 35 maulvis.
"Jehad is when you fight back if your religion is attacked. But this (the violence in the state) is not Jehad; people here don’t follow things like that," he adds.
The maulvis, known for their oratory and influence over people, believe ignorance is the root cause of all the troubles in the state. Therefore, many of them have stepped out of their villages for the first time to tell people that they should question what is happening in the state.
"There is so much of ignorance in these areas that some people even think that Jammu and Kashmir is entire India. They don’t know about anything beyond that," says Maulvi Mohamamd Sadiq from Buddhal, Rajouri.
The Army and maulvis are working together in Kashmir for the first time and say they will accomplish their mission.
"Apart from these 35 maulvis, there are many more who want to join in. Perhaps this may not have been true in the stage of militancy when the army was not able to project itself in the manner as now," says General Officer Commanding, White Knight Corps, Lt General Tej Sapru.
