New Delhi: Young kids today are dealing with many pressures and at times they are not able to cope with these which pushes them over the edge. Suicide then, becomes an unfortunate way for them to do away with this pressure.
Take a look at how parents can play an important role in looking out for signs in their children that will prevent them from taking harsh steps to harm themselves.
If your child has been behaving in a significantly different manner, these could be initial worrying signs of stress. For example, your child, who may be typically very outgoing and sociable, starts to withdraw, and then you as parents should try to find out the reasons behind it. If you see a change in your child's sleep and appetite pattern, then do not ignore it. Also look out for emotional signs like low mood and frequent crying spells.
A sense of hopelessness and helplessness is often present in kids with suicidal intent. Very often, stress that is not managed effectively can show up as irritability, anger and temper tantrums.
It is very important for you as a parent to recognise that not only kids with poor academic records are at risk of suicide. In fact many children who are high achievers experience tremendous amounts of stress.
An over focus on studies and a need to excel puts some kids in a vulnerable group. You should encourage an all-round development in your child. Tell them that a set-back academically, does not equal complete failure. In case your child makes any references to feeling depressed, please do not dismiss it. It is critical you take this feedback seriously as this may be a cry for help.
It is also very important to re-assure your child of your support. To assess the risk, you must consult a mental health expert who can then guide the both the child and you on how to get past this phase effectively.
