Prez chopper-AI near miss report blames IAF

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The probe report on the near miss at the Mumbai airport involving the President's helicopter and an Indian Airlines flight is out.

The report blames the Air Force and says the IAF helicopters landed without clearance from the Air Traffic Control.

The report highlighted that there is no standard operating procedure between the Air Force and the Airport Authorities of India regarding VVIP movements.

In fact, the report says, there is a difference of opinion between the Airports Authority and the IAF on the procudure to be followed.

The incident took place some time back when the Presidential helicopter convoy was on its way towards the airport. The Presidential entourage consisting of three choppers was cleared to take off from INS Kunjali and land at Santa Cruz between two taxiways.

The pilot of the Air India flight to Delhi - IC 866 - was to take off, but aborted the take off at the last moment when it saw the helicopter landing on the runway.

President Pratibha Patil was travelling in the second helicopter of the entourage.
