Ajmer: In a shocking case of superstition taking its toll on families, three persons of a family died at the Dargah in Ajmer after they had been fasting for 39 days to ward off an evil spell.

Nine persons of the same family are now undergoing treatment at JLN Hospital in Ajmer. The family from Allahabad has been living in Ajmer for a year-and-a-half. The police are now looking into the matter.

This family paid the price for their superstitious belief. They had been offering prayers regularly at Ajmer Dargah and fasting for 39 days since someone had told them it would ward off an evil spell.

Ahmad Raza, Dargah Nazim of Ajmer said, “They were told by someone if they fast for 40 days and pray regularly they'll be able to come out of the evil spell they believe had been cast on them, but the family lost three of their members to the superstitious belief.”

Those who died are a 16-year-old girl and two boys — one 22 years and another 25.

Hariprasad Sharma, SP, Ajmer said, “We're investigating the matter.”

It is surprising that superstition has taken such a strong impact on the family that despite the deaths, the family agreed to undergo treatment only after the administration stepped in.

Sheikh Ahmad, member of the family, Ajmer said, “We were fasting to ward off evil spell.”

It remains a matter of absolute shock and surprise that this family of a retired merchant navy official could fall into the trap of superstition, which led to the death of three of their members.
