London: Britain's Prince William is one step closer to becoming the next King.

This may be announced soon as people see him being groomed under an arrangement in the royal family.

William may benefit by his father Prince Charles stepping aside.

Prince Charles is the first-in-line to the throne but has spent his life as just that as his mother Queen Elizabeth II still reigns.

The arrangement has been prompted by Prince Charles' 60th birthday in November when he will officially become the king.

Charles who will the oldest-ever heir to the throne, it is believed doesn't want to impose the ordeal of a life spent waiting, on his son.

According to sources in Buckingham Palace, 26-year-old William is seen as the only hope for the survival of the monarchy past another generation and is likely to make his girlfriend Kate Middleton his Queen.

The young prince is presently on a tour of military and Government departments and will now undertake higher profile engagements, some of them with the 82-year-old Queen.
