Prisoner shot at Indore Central jail

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Unidentified gunmen fired at inmates of the Indore Central Jail Monday morning when a prisoner was being taken by jail authorities from one prison to another in the city. One of the inmates was shot in the chest who was later shifted to a hospital.

Police say the attack was motivated by gang rivalry as the incident seemed fallout of a dispute between two groups in the Central Jail. Three prisoners were injured in a scuffle between two gangs in the Central jail on Sunday. Some of the inmates had then asked to be moved to the district jail.

Following the dispute between two groups in the jail premises, jail authorities were shifting one of the prisoners identified as Sonu alias Kailash to another as a precautionary measure, Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Rameshwar Gupta told PTI.

However, unidentified persons shot at the vehicle in which Sonu was being shifted from a close range. The bullet hit Sonu near the ear.

The injured prisoner was rushed to the M Y Hospital where his condition was reported to be stable. Six prisoners were injured in the dispute between two groups over a petty issue on Sunday. Both groups attacked each other with blades and pieces of broken flower pots in the jail premises.
