Mumbai: People usually copy what others have done but when music director Pritam couldn’t think of anything new he copied one of his old tunes for a new film.
Pritam’s profile on the online encyclopedia wikipedia suggests that lifting songs for this music composer is nothing new. But this time round, he has copied his own music, from an old album called Aria, which was co-produced by filmmaker Onir.
Pritam has used the music from the same album for a song in his score for director duo Abbas-Mastan's film Naqaab.
“It was a song that we were very emotionally attached to. Our first music video that we did together, it was a first for both of us. We were quite upset when we were not told about it,” Onir said.
Not only Onir, Pritam’s act hasn’t gone down well with the co-producer of Aria, Namita Nair either.
“You can just pass it by saying that it’s a remix. It’s another version of the same song because the tune is completely the same. It was composed for a label nine years ago and we as producers were part of it. Obviously the responsibility is very much ours as well,” said Nair.
Now, Rajeev Sharma, whose company, FreeSpirit Entertainment Pvt Ltd, owns the music rights for Aria, is planning to revive the album.
“We have put it on record to Pritam and to the music company and also to the film production company which is Tips that the composition and publishing rights are with us. Pritam had done it for us. Something like this which is done without permission is liable to legal proceedings also,” Sharma said.
However, Pritam has maintained his silence on the issue. But the noise over recycling his own songs is building up with sites like youtube.com and myfilmytube.com, playing out both the songs.
