New Delhi: Priyadarshini Matoo’s father Chaman Lal Mattoo has blamed the CBI for failing to file a review in the judgment that was handed out by the Supreme Court last month.
The date for filing the review appeal at the Supreme Court ends on Friday. In an anguished letter to the CBI he stated that that it should inform families if they don’t wish to pursue reviews so as to allow such families to seek a judicial review.
Last month Santosh Singh's death penalty for Matoo's murder was commuted to life imprisonment.
A Bench comprising Justices H S Bedi and C K Prasad had said, "The conviction is maintained," However, the Bench said, "To our mind, certain things are in favour of the appellant (Singh). We are converting the punishment of death sentence into life imprisonment."
The apex court had on July 29 reserved its verdict on Singh's appeal. Singh, a law student in the Delhi University, had raped and murdered Priyadarshini, a third-year law student, in January 1996.
