Rae Bareli: Beleaguered Samajwadi Party's efforts to get Priyanka Gandhi, the election agent of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, out of Rae Bareli failed on Sunday when the Returning Officer rejected its demand.
After its demand to oust Priyanka from Rae Bareli was rejected, the SP alleged that she had hatched a conspiracy to indulge in booth-capturing in Monday's bypolls in Rae Bareli.
In a letter to the Election Commission, SP state unit president Ram Saran Das demanded Priyanka be ordered to leave Rae Bareli immediately.
This was stated by SP General Secretary Beni Prasad Verma, whose son-in-law is the party candidate in the bypolls, at a press conference in Lucknow.
Charging Priyanka with hatching a "consipracy to capture booths during tomorrow's polling", Verma alleged a large number of plainclothes police personnel from the Congress-ruled states of Punjab and Haryana had reached Rae Bareli to give effect to the plan.
In another letter to the poll panel, SP candidate Rajkumar Chaudhary said Priyanka could not become the election agent as she enjoyed SPG security.
The letter alleged she had been terrorising the electorate.
Earlier raising strong objection to Priyanka's stay in Rae Bareli, Samajwadi Party MP Bhagwati Singh demanded that she be asked to leave the constituency 'as EC guidelines clearly state that no outsiders with security guards could be present after the end of campaign."
However, the EC, while ordering that VIPs getting security from the state government leave the constituency after the campaign, said the order did not apply to candidates and their agents.
Singh, who is leading a pack of over a dozen SP members still camping in Rae Bareli despite the EC direction, said: "If Samajwadi Party polling agent in Farrukhabad constituency Sheopal Singh Yadav could be removed last time on similar grounds, then why not Priyanka."
"We will remain in the constituency as long as Priyanka, who also enjoys heavy security, remians here," he said.
Singh regretted that his demand has been rejected by the Returning Officer.
UPCC Chief Spokesman Akhilesh Pratap Singh asserted that Priyanka has been authorised by the EC to stay in the constituency as Sonia Gandhi's polling agent and criticised the 'fuss' created by the SP over her stay in the constituency.
