Prize a distraction: Venkataraman

Chennai: Nobel Laureate Venkataraman Ramakrishnan is in the state of his birth –Tamil Nadu. This is his first visit after winning the prestigious Nobel prize for his works in chemistry.

He told CNN-IBN that the Nobel was actually a distraction and hopes to get down to work again.

Prize a distraction

Venkataraman Ramakrishnan: Price is also a distraction and hope that it's a temporary distraction, because we still have lots of work to do scientifically.

On Indians

Venkataraman Ramakrishnan: There are lot of people in India doing work of international caliber. One person who has been internationally recognised is CNR Rao who this year received the Royal Medal of the Royal Society, which is a very prestigious award.

On success

Venkataraman Ramakrishnan: I think to be able to successfully get not just an occasional Nobel prize, which could be due to individual efforts, but to get them at regular intervals like in the US, Europe or Japan, it will require substantial investment and it will require building up a large community of first rate scientists.

On family

Venkataraman Ramakrishnan: Having a supportive family who are willing to make a change in their lives for your work is crucial and I am grateful for that.
