Siliguri: Siliguri in West Bengal is simmering and the Army has been called in to control the situation after at least five people have been injured in fresh clashes between pro and anti-Gorkhaland activists.
Police had to fire teargas shells to control the situation after Gorkha Janmukti Morcha supporters and opponents clashed near Mahananda bridge in Siliguri on Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, 22 Battalion of Sashastra Seema Bal has also been deployed in Siliguri.
The Union Home Ministry has also sent 1,000 central paramilitary force personnel to West Bengal to deal with the situation.
In Darjeeling, too, there has been no respite for people caught in the hills versus plains tussle.
Gorkha agitators have relaxed their bandh by 60-hours, apparently to ensure that tourists leave Darjeeling safely.
But local political activists in Siliguri have called a 48-hour bandh to block trucks going towards Darjeeling.
The activists believe that the relaxation in the bandh was a ploy by the Gorkhas to come down to the plains, stock up on food and other essentials before going to the hills again.
Darjeeling remains tense.
It is virtually cut-off during what is usually the peak tourist season.
There is also tension in the Dooars region of the plains, where Section 144 has been imposed.
West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has called an all-party meeting on June 17 to discuss the crisis. He also appealed for calm in the hills and the adjacent areas.
