Nagpur: Confusion reins supreme in the BJP on what should be the party's main poll plank. Terrorism, inflation and many state-specific issues are ones that clearly demand attention.
However, attention itself was a much bigger issue at Ambedkar's Dikhsha Bhoomi in Nagpur where top BJP leadership dozed through party president Rajnath Singh's long and winding inaugural address at the party’s National Executive.
The one issue that shook them out of slumber was the party’s old and ultimate plank – the Ram Mandir issue.
"It is our vow and aspiration to build a grand Ram temple at Ayodhya, and there is no person on earth who can come in the way. We are looking for an opportunity to build a temple," Rajnath Singh said.
In the last three days, BJP's idea to contest polls has meandered from the Gandhian way of economics on combating economic downturn to weaving a localised and state-specific campaign. A power presentation in Friday's session emphasised the launch of a positive campaign.
The problem for the BJP is evident. It has recently lost some crucial states after launching a highly volatile campaign on terror. Just after Mumbai polls and with inflation figures falling back to single digit mark, the dilemma for the party which has mobilised its campaign on these issues for the last two years is evident.
"Ayodhya is nothing but reiteration of the party's stand on the issue. The election will be contested on positive note,” said psephologist and BJP national executive member, Narsimha Rao.
The difference of approach among the party leaders remains. With many voices wanting to be heard, it's bit of a confused message coming out of Nagpur. It is clear from the deliberations that BJP is not looking forward to a one issue election.
