Ujjain: The Professor Sabharwal murder case seems to be going the Jessica Lall way. Key witnesses are turning hostile one by one and in a major setback to the prosecution, two more witnesses turned hostile on Tuesday, a day after the court declared two out of the seven witnesses hostile.
Librarian of Madhav College, Govind Kushwaha and BJP leader Sanwar Patel, who was interrogated by the CID along with nine other people, have refused to identify the culprits.
On Monday, peon Komal Singh and sports teacher Manohar Dodia of Madhav College turned hostile and refused to identify those arrested by the state CID for allegedly murdering Sabharwal on August 26, 2006, after the cancellation of the college union polls.
Both Singh and Dodia told the court that, though, they had seen some people manhandling the professor, they are unable to identify them.
Singh said that he had rushed towards Sabharwal soon after some people started manhandling him. But since the professor fell down, he could not identify anybody in the rush, as he was involved in lifting and helping Sabharwal.
Dodia also said that he reached the spot on hearing Singh’s call to lift Sabharwal but added that he had not seen anybody assaulting the professor.
Prosecution advocate, Vikram Singh Sikrwar and Vijay Kadel said that the court has declared the two key eyewitnesses in the case hostile, as they are unable to identify anybody.
After the death of Sabharwal, it was Singh who had claimed that he had seen people beating the professor.
The CID had 40 witnesses in the case, including seven eyewitnesses, but the case actually rested on the statements of Singh and Dodia who were seen carrying professor Sabharwal into the ambulance after the assault.
The turn of events has, however, not surprised family members of the dead professor and his son dubs the CID investigation a cover up.
“It’s all up to the Supreme Court now. It’s the last ray of hope,” Prof Sabharwal's son Himanshu Sabharwal says.
