Guwahati: Fifty-six year old Professor Md Islamuddin was allegedly shot dead by Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup’s militants inside the Manipur University campus on May 25.
The KYKL has said that Prof Islamuddin had committed wrongs during the recent student election. This incident has shocked the students and teachers of the university.
“I am very much disappointed over the allegation made by the outfit. Killing an innocent and unarmed person with gun that also in the university campus itself claiming to bring justice is unthinkable,” says Prof Islamuddin’s wife.
Fear has gripped Manipur University campus. The inmates of the boy's hostel are evacuating their rooms fearing police harassment. On May 26 the students union blocked roads and burnt tyres in protest.
“Such a killing of a professional at the highest temple of learning is very upsetting. It bleeds the heart of the student community,” says Education Minister, government of Manipur, Jayenta Kumar.
Imphal had witnessed a similar situation in February when a government employee Thingnam Kishan was murdered by militants. But this cold blooded murder in a campus that houses a camp of the Assam Rifles inside it has almost been accepted as part of life in Manipur.
“For last five-six years the journalist community has been targetted by militant groups. This murder is a violent continuation of the same where the militants groups do not allow democratic freedom,” says Prof Nani Mahanta of Gauhati University.
