Promise of quota not violation of code: Khurshid

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid on Tuesday said that his promise of nine per cent reservation for Muslims in Uttar Pradesh was not a violation of the model code of conduct.

Khurshid in an exclusive interview with CNN-IBN said, "Why would I violate the model code of conduct? Please read the code of conduct and find me a word, a phrase, a sentence or a paragraph and say that what I have done, said violates those words. I will accept it."

"I have some sense I know what the code of conduct is and I have not only not violated the code of conduct but what I have done essentially reflects what you will see as part of the party campaign because this is a position that we (Congress) have taken before the elections and it will continue beyond the elections," Khurshid added.

He further claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will lose the upcoming elections, as they are 'losers'.

"You know a bad workman quarrels with his tools and indeed someone who can't win a match complains about the other side all the time. I suggest BJP that they should fight election. They're going to lose it because they are losers. They are very bad losers but they should fight an election. We are fighting an election, let them also come clean about what they have to say," Khurshid said.

The Election Commission on Tuesday, however, issued a notice to Khurshid and his wife on a complaint by the BJP that he violated the model code of conduct by announcing 9 per cent sub quota for Muslims if the party was voted to power in Uttar Pradesh.

Addressing a poll meeting in Farrukhabad on Monday, the Law Minister said that the Congress party will provide nine per cent sub-quota for Muslims if it was voted to power in the Uttar Pradesh assembly election.

Khurshid had said the Congress will provide nine per cent reservation within the existing OBC quota.

The Election Commission has asked Khurshid to reply in writing by 5 pm on Thursday.
