Oxford: The absence of media in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) has meant prolonged silence on life there. But ironically, General Pervez Musharraf's visit to the US and the UK has lifted that veil.
"There is a great deal of torture of people involved in politics, in Azad, and a lot of people won't be involved because of the fears and the demonstration of brute force by the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), by the military and by the police," said Brad Adams, Human Rights Watch.
The Human Rights Watch recently published a report, With Friends Like These: Human Rights Violations in Azad (Free) Kashmir which said the Pakistan military routinely tortures Kashmiri political activists and gives more freedom to terrorists.
Following the publication of the report, Amnesty International held protests when Musharraf visited Oxford demanding explanation on how hundreds of people had gone missing in PoK.
"These people have first of all been apprehended by the Pakistani police and security agents, and many of them have then been handed over to US intelligence agencies. Of the people at Guantanamo Bay we are able to trace, we believe that two-thirds of them were originally apprehended in Pakistan," said Sarah Green, Amnesty International.
