New Delhi: The hopes of India's cricket fans were shattered on Saturday in Port of Spain.
Angry fans in Varanasi, Kolkata, Indore and Delhi also came out on the streets protesting India's dismal loss to Sri Lanka.
Protestors burned effigies of Indian team members and even defaced posters of the Indian cricket team.
Similar protests were held in Delhi's Najafgarh, where Virender Sehwag's house is located. Fans also took out protest marches in Kolkata and Indore.
Security has been stepped up outside cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni's residence in Ranchi.
The house, which is under construction, had come under attack by angry fans last week after India lost to Bangladesh. There are fears of a similar backlash, as Dhoni has failed to live up to expectations in this match too.
According to PTI report, a group of cricket fans gave vent to their anger by pelting stones at the restaurant of bowling spearhead Zaheer Khan in Pune on Saturday morning.
However, Anish Khan, the Indian cricketer's brother who
looks after the restaurant, denied any such incident.
No major damage was caused in the stone pelting to the restaurant.
Only a few glass panes were broken, the police said, adding that security has been tightened in the area after the incident.
Needing a win against Sri Lanka to ensure entry into the Super eight stage of the World Cup, India failed dramatically. Mathematically, they still have a chance if Bermuda beat Bangladesh but don't pin your hopes on that one. The dream is almost over.
