Pro-Tibet fire spreads to US, protesters hit NY streets

New York: The Tibet fire spread to the US on Friday when pro-Tibet protesters were arrested outside the UN building after clashes broke out between protesters and security men in New York on Friday evening.

US police arrested seven pro-Tibet protestors outside the United Nations Headquarters.

China has been feeling the heat just ahead of the Beijing Summer Olympics as images from inside Tibet indicated a lot of disturbances and a crackdown by the Chinese security forces.

At least two people are reported killed on Friday after violence erupted in Lhasa over Chinese rule.

In New York, more than 50 protestors took to the streets shouting 'Free Tibet' slogans. Tension mounted when police told the protestors to move out from the traffic island in front of UN Building in Manhattan.

Police threatened to arrest all protesters, but the situation eased when they moved out to an open space.

US police say seven Tibetans were arrested, apparently because they were trying to enter the UN.

Peaceful street marches by the monks have been slowly giving way to violent demonstrations in different places across the world.

"United Nations, they are not doing anything and a lot of Tibetans are dying, that's why I'm very sad. The most I can do is show my support for my country. A lot of Tibetans are suffering back home, a lot of them are in prison and nobody will know where they have been taken to," a Tibetan demonstrator, Tenzin Namglo, said.

"The Tibetan communities all over the world and Tibetan support groups want the world to know that the Chinese government is using the Olympics as a political tool to legitimise their claim over Tibet," Kalayan Mendoza, coordinator for Students for Free Tibet International, claimed.
