Public angry over Modi's demolition drive

Gandhinagar: In Gujarat's capital Gandhinagar the demolition drive to remove illegal building has seen more than 200 temples being razed to the ground, inviting the public's ire against Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

The famous Sai Baba temple, one of the known landmarks in Gandhinagar, was also brought down on Tuesday after the session's court rejected a plea demanding a stay on its demolition.

About a 100 residents of the area gathered to protest after the temple was demolished.

"Those who have desecrated this temple and I am saying this with conviction that their names will be wiped out by people in the days to come," thundered Manaji Marwadi, managing trustee, Sai Baba Temple.

So far 200 temples have been pulled down by Modi's government as part of a drive against illegal encroachment.

Even the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal have not made a huge noise over the demolition drive. It an indication of Modi's growing clout within the Sangh Parivar. But there is widespread public anger.

"There is no place for Hindus to go and pray. All the temples have been pulled down. Where do we go?" asked a Gandhinagar resident, Arun Solanki.

Another Gandhinagar Resident Ramnivas Sharma said, "People will give a fitting reply to this, but they don't know the politics behind this demolition drive."

Gandhinagar has traditionally always voted with the Bharatiya Janata Party and it is also the seat of BJP's prime ministerial candidate LK Advani.

Now Modi's demolition drive has now set the public guessing about his possible political motives.
