Puducherry protests port expansion

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The proposed expansion of the port in Puducherry, which was earlier known as Pondicherry, has run into rough weather.

People living in adjoining areas have been holding protests against the project. They fear an expansion of the port will erode beaches and turn groundwater salty.

The Puducherry government has now promised to have a meeting with the residents to get their views on the project.

Once expanded, the port will be able to handle up to 20 million tonnes and it will cover 400 acres of land.
