Pune: A bus driver ran berserk in Pune on Wednesday morning, driving his vehicle in almost a murderous rage running over pedestrians, school children, morning joggers. The rampage went on for almost an hour before the man could be overpowered and arrested. Nine people lost their lives in this mindless act and 27 others were injured.

Morning joggers and office goers flung little school children out of the way as the driver at the wheels of a state transport bus Santosh Mane went on a murderous rampage.

"The man went berserk. He went on ramming the vehicles plying on the road, he was in a dangerous mood. He killed 9 people and injured 27," Meeran Borwankar, Commissioner, Pune Police, said.

At 8 am on Wednesday, Mane, a driver with the state transport corporation, using a master key to state buses, hijacked a Satara bound bus from the Swargate terminal.

Mane then went berserk, driving in a frenzy, most of the times on the wrong side of the road, ramming into vehicles mowing down pedestrians, as the city police joined in the chase on motorcycles. Sharif Kutti, a student who was among those who helped overpower Mane, said that it was a nightmare.

"The driver seemed to be mentally sick as he didn't stop even as people kept trying to stop him," Kutti said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said, "It's unfortunate incident

It seems that the driver was not medically fit. An inquiry has been ordered in the case."

The police is yet to clarify the motive of the bus driver. But, the case is certainly one of the worst cases of random killings in the country.
