Pune: The bus driver from Pune went on a reckless rampage through the city's busy streets killing 9 people and injuring 27, has been sent to police custody till February 3. The question, however, remains as to what exactly caused Santosh Mane to go berserk.
Driving on the wrong side of the road, the state transport bus driver rammed into over 40 vehicles, mowing down everyone in his path before he was overpowered.
Sharif Kutty, a student who helped nab Mane, said, "He was completely psycho, and uncontrollable, and I knew I had to warn others about him."
But what exactly led to Mane's murderous rage? The police is still investigating, but a Solapur-based psychiatrist said that he treated Mane for depression last year.
The psychiatrist Dr Dilip Burde said, "I treated Santosh Mane from May 3, 2010 to July 29, 2010. He was treated for depression."
Mane has a wife and four children in Solapur, three of them from a previous marriage. He moved to Pune 13 years ago, and stayed alone at the Swargate rest house for bus drivers and conductors. Other drivers at the depot said that harassment by supervisors and grim working conditions drove Mane to insanity.
Macchindra Jagtap, a bus conductor, said, "He was involved in an accident three months back. He was troubled a lot. He was neither suspended nor was he dismissed."
While the police look for a clue into what led Mane to the killing spree, the families of his victims are still coming to grips with the senseless tragedy.
