Pune: Piyush Kolur from Pune thought that he had won the battle when was cured of Acute Lympoblast Leukemia — a type of blood cancer — with the help of chemotherapy in 2004.
But during a routine blood test in December 2006, the seven-year-old came face-to-face with the shocking news that he was wrong.
"In routine check up, we got the shocking news that it has relapsed. There is no specific reason for this and it was perhaps because the cancer cells were stronger than chemotherapy. Maybe they got suppressed and surfaced again," says Piyush's father Maltesh Kolur.
For Piyush, the battle for his life is more difficult now. His parents say the process of 'matched unrelated donors bone marrow transplant' is the only treatment possible now.
The treatment costs over Rs 1.2 crore, an amount Maltesh knows this will not be easy to gather.
"We are planning to take him to a hospital called Robert Debre in Paris. Under idiealistic conditions, it will take him four months to get the transplatation and come back the normal way," says Piyush's father.
Maltesh has visited many people and organisations for monetary support, without much success. Yet the Kolur family has not lost hope and there is always someone to keep them motivated. "I want to get well soon because my friends are waiting for me," says Piyush.
Piyush cherishes the dream of becoming an Indian Air Force pilot but before that, he has another dream to realise — a dream seen by his parents to make him live for another 100 years.
