Shilpa Dhamija Residents in the Phoolach-wadi area in Pune live in constant fear of monsoons throughout the year.
For Aruna Thakur, this has not been the first ill-fated monsoon. Last year her house was completely submerged due to the rains and this year too her house faced the same fate.
Located in Pune's low-lying areas, Aruna's house has always been in the danger zone, during monsoon and saving the house from the rains and flood has always been an impossible task.
"My house was washed away last year. I had already taken loan to construct the house. It got flooded in May again and I am yet to repay the first loan," Aruna Thakur says.
Every year around 200 people are relocated from the Phoolachiwadi area during the monsoons.
The civic authorities have made adequate arrangements for relocating people from the flooded areas. But the people want the administration to support them even after the water recedes.
"We just want the government to allow us to build our houses on higher ground," she says.
The government has arranged for relief centres, but they are temporary and the people in Pune want a permanent solution.
A solution that will solve not just their problem but also the government’s to relocate hundreds, every year, during monsoons.
