The following story was shot and edited by a Citizen Journalist from Pune, Shamit Ghosh,. It is shocking report on how we treat our dead.
Pune: Koregaon Park or KP, better known for the Rajneesh Ashram, provides a peaceful haven for many.
It lays by the Mulahmuttah river in Pune and because of the ashram has visitors coming from all over the world all year around.
River banks are homes to burning ghats and there is a cemetery, which is maintained by the Pune Municipal Corporation.
However, the cemetery looks more like a human dump yard.
Initially the bodies were buried but since the graves are reused every three months and bodies take about the same time to decompose, so the bodies are just thrown and left out instead of a reburial.
The cemetery is full of human skulls, bones, even bones with flesh and also beer cans.
What is alarming that when a body is removed from a grave it is only partially decomposed and then the dogs feed on it.
What was even more alarming was when CNN IBN interviewed two individuals, one talking on behalf of the caretaker who is non-existent and the other a resident, near the cemetery, both seemed unperturbed by the site.
In fact, till about 10 years ago, they said, the Pune Municipal Corporation used to bring in aboutt 15-20 dead bodies at a time and just dump them.
Does it show that once someone is dead, we as individuals just wash our hands and walk away?
What do people think when they come to bury their loved ones?
After seeing bones and filth all around, isn't it like a signal saying, no, I should not have the creamation here or is it just sheer negligence.
A negligence by those living in the neighbourhood and also by the municipal corporation?
All this just puts a question about whether we care about those living, because the ones no more have definitely gone to the grave.
