Lavasa project runs into troubled waters

Pune: Maharashtra government has finally decided to regularise the land transfer deal of the 25,000 Lavasa Resort City near Pune, where 25 thousand acres of land have been acquired from farmers to build a lake city resort.

However green activists have now taken the issue to Bombay High Court claiming the land deal has no environment clearance and the court has admitted the petition.

But the Maharashtra government’s decision to regularise land transfer has caused yet another set back for Lavasa City Corporation. The Bombay High Court has admitted a petition filed by National Alliance of People's Movement claiming over 25 thousand acres of land acquisition has been illegal.

The NGO claims this kind of acquisition requires clearance from Union Environment Ministry, which has not yet been taken.

RTI activist Vivek Velankar said, “State and central government funds have been diverted for this private project and they must publish all the details of this project."

Some of the objections raised by the NGO in the petition are:

·Lavasa violates the Environment Protection Act 1986

·A lot of rare species of trees in the tropical zone will be destroyed

·The construction at Lavasa is happening on hill tops that are over 1000 ft above sea level and hence this requires special permission from Union Environment Ministry.

Activists in Pune who have resisted the displacement caused by Lavasa are vocal about the damage caused.

Social Activist Vinita Deshmukh said, "Entire natural surroundings have been damaged in the area and even Pune is going to get affected because water will be diverted from Pune for this project"
