Chandigarh: Ahead of the Assembly elections in Punjab, the war of words between Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and the Chief Election Commissioner heated up, with the Chief Minister saying that the Election Commission is over stepping its Constitutional mandate.
The Chief Minister accused the election officers of creating a confusion and interfering in governance matters.
The Election Commission retorted by saying that it was only acting within its limits.
Money power seems to be the heart of the issue. The Election Commission's orders against carrying excess cash has hit a raw nerve, with the Punjab Chief Minister saying it amounts to harassment. And the transfer of key officers ordered by the EC has hit a raw nerve.
Usha Sharma, Special Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab, said, "Over the past several months they were told to carry out transfers but they did not do so."
