Chandigarh: Punjab's Kapurthala jail inmates are using social media site Facebook to spread their terror and maintain their supremacy over other gangsters. A group of prisoners led by murder convict Sukhdev beat up another prisoner and uploaded the video on Facebook from inside the jail.
Sukhdev alias Sukha is a professional gangster and has several cases of illegal activities registered against him in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. Sukhdev is lodged in the Kapurthala jail on the charges of murdering a BJP leader Sudarshan Dhillon. To maintain his hold over his own and other gangsters outside the jail Sukhdev uploads his earlier videos on a Facebook page that has a number of followers. Every post of his invites a number of comments and likes.
Many high profile prisoners including terrorists are also lodged in the jail.
Some prisoners admitted they had access to mobile phones and even drugs by bribing jail authorities. Cell phones are available for as little as Rs 500 inside the jail premises. A prisoner said, "We get everything. Anything can be obtained for money."
The Punjab government said they were not aware of such incidents. When contacted, Sarwan Singh Phillaur, Jails minister of Punjab said, "It is not in our knowledge. We will look into this."
Police Inspector Inderjit Singh who arrested Sukhdev said, "Sukhdev was a petty criminal. He started off with contract killings. He has got links abroad and now he has turned into a notorious criminal."
It is not a new revelation as cell phones and Internet connections were available to prisoners in Punjab jails. Even hardcore terrorists like Jagtar Singh Hawara have been in touch with their handlers and accomplices sitting in other countries.
