Jalandhar: Bibi Jagir Kaur, a prominent Akali leader and a minister in the Punjab government, will now spend five years in jail. The former chief of the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhandhak Committee has been sentenced for the forced abortion of her daughter Harpreet.

But it could have been worse. Kaur was accused of murdering her daughter over her marriage with a person from a lower caste. The Patiala CBI court has now rejected that charge. Harpreet's husband Kamaljeet Singh is stunned by the court order.

"I am not satisfied with the judgement," Kamaljeet said.

As the judge read out the verdict, Bibi Jagir Kaur broke down inside the courtroom. She will now appeal against the sentence in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Bibi's lawyer Maninder Pal Singh said, "We will appeal in the High Court against the court order."

Pressure will now mount on the one-month-old Akali-BJP Government to drop Jagir Kaur from the Cabinet. But will Parkash Singh Badal bite the bullet, given Jagir Kaur sway over the powerful SGPC?
