Chandigarh: From Cartoons to Kolaveri, political parties in Punjab are out to establish that their rivals have done nothing for Punjab. Going by that logic the voters are left wondering if any party has done anything for the state at all.
Punjab's politics is synonymous to the battle of Punjab's two leading politicians, Captain Amarinder Singh of the Congress and Parkash Singh Badal of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). The 2012 Assembly Elections have thrown up two more twin characters and even though they are cartoons deployed by the Indian National Congress, they mean business.
Jeeta and Jaggi are the two cartoon characters that the Indian National Congress has deployed this election season in Punjab. They poke fun at the Akalis for their unkept promises and exaggerated claims. An angry Akali Dal has complained to the Election Commission (EC). But the Congress doesn't seem bothered. It says the campaign is hitting home and that is why the Akalis are worried.
PPCC President Captain Amarinder Singh said, "Jeeta and Jaggi are carrying the truth about the Akalis to the people."
The SAD has hit back with its own radio and print campaign. They have unleashed Jhootha and Thaggi to take on Jeeta and Jaggi.
Punjab's new third front People's Party of Punjab led by Manpreet Badal is not far behind. Their Punjabi version of 'Kolaveri', sung by Punjabi Comedian Bhagwant Mann is about how both the Akalis and the Congress have failed to do anything for the state. Bhagwant Mann himself is a PPP candidate from Jalandhar.
For now humour has become serious business for political parties.
