Chandigarh: Nine-year-old Jhilmil suffers from the Downs Syndrome. She has been attending Savera, a school for specially-abled children in Mohali for several years.
But now the 70 children studying here are facing an uncertain future. The state government has issued notice to the owner of this property following a neighbour's complaint.
The administration says the school is a commercial establishment, and cannot operate in this residential block.
The parents are a worried lot.
“The first concern of the government should be to take care of citizens and not show the rule book,” says a parent Capt N Kakkar.
While some of children stay in a hostel run on the school premises, the parents of some others had taken transfers from different parts of Punjab so that they could admit their children in the school.
Prashi Sood, whose grandson Arjun studies here, is moved to tears at the government's callous attitude.
“Where will they go? Should we isolate them completely?” she says.
While parents argue the children need specialised care, the state Administration claims the children would be better off joining regular government schools.
“We are trying to bridge the gaps in the society,” says Director Public Instructions (DPI) Schools, SK Setia.
