Bhatinda (Punjab): The migrant labourers in Punjab are a worried lot. The recent incidents of clashes between the Sikhs and followers of the Dera Sacha Sauda in the Malwa region have unnerved many of them and they are moving out in large numbers.
Says a migrant laborer, Ram Parkash, "We are going back because we are scared of the violence here."
While labourers like Ram Prakash are on their way home, those who are staying put fear for their safety and say they too will leave if things don't improve.
Says another migrant laborer, Sunil Kumar, " I am scared and want to go back to Bihar."
Businessmen say work at industrial units has already been affected. Says President, Bathinda Chambers of Commerce, Raman Wattas, "Like this, a lot of industries will shut down if things don't improve."
Migrant labour plays a significant role in Punjab's economy and their departure is adversely affecting industries.
The Punjab Police, on its part, has increased security on the streets. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal also has promised law and order will be maintained across the state, but labourers don't seem to be buying the promise.
