New Delhi: Rajasthani dancers were at their colourful best to raise the curtains for the 5th ISHARA International Puppet Theatre Festival, starting Saturday at the India Habitat Centre in the Capital.
“There is a collaborative piece from France, there is Turkish puppet theatre and a chunk of films from Cannes. So it’s a totally new dimension to puppetry,” said puppeteer Dadi Pudumjee.
The festival started off with Dadi's production Simple Dreams and the performers used the simplest of props that charmed the audience.
“To use such simple props to create all that is beautiful in nature was fantastic,” said an audience member.
Although traditional puppetry used dolls to tell a story, the art form has evolved over the years. The new puppeteers are now giving it the human touch.
“I think it’s about magic, illusion and giving yourself the permission to believe,” said an Australian puppeteer, Jacob.
While it’s fun to watch a puppet show, what really goes into the making? In preparation for the Indo-French show to be staged on Sunday, while some were busy experimenting with music and colours, the others were involved in characterising. But ultimately, the show will live on the interpretation of the audience.
In the coming week, puppeteers from five different countries will put in more life and meaning into the otherwise inanimate play-things.
