Bhubaneswar: Odisha DGP MM Praharaj said that there is a terror threat during Rath Yatra in Puri from the extremist groups and hence, there is a heavy security deployment as the majestic Jagannath Rath Yatra began on Thursday. The annual Rath Yatra began in Puri, Odisha and Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
Odisha DGP has advised people to stay alert and not to panic.
"We have intelligence inputs of a possible bomb blast in Puri," said Praharaj.
Lakhs of devotees are thronging the Lord Jagannath temples in both cities. In Gujarat, Chief Minister Narendra Modi performed the sweeping of the chariot ritual. Scores of devotees queued up for turns to pull the lord's chariot in Puri.
More than 10 lakh devotees are expected to witness the colourful festival. After two months of hard work, the three majestic chariots of Lord Jagannath are all set to roll out in Puri.
As per century-old tradition, elephants will have the first glimpse of Lord Jagannath and would lead the procession through different parts of the two cities.
