Putting back gardens in Garden City, Bangalore

Bangalore: For N S Ramakanth and his neighbours, it was the constant drone of traffic that was the bane of daily life at Seshadripuram in the heart of Bangalore.

So much so that last year, Ramakanth and his group got together to get the famed Kumara Park re-done. Now, the park is like sweet music to their ears.

"Almost 600-700 people visit the park daily," says Ramakanth proudly.

Weather-proof speakers have been installed around the park, providing visitors a peaceful retreat from the maddening rush of the streets. CDs are contributed by residents.

But renovating the garden was not an easy task. Repeated requests to the corporation to improve the condition of the park yielded no results. Finally, members pitched in money and installed rainwater harvesting facilities.

Water from surrounding areas now flow to the park.

"Now we want to have a committee of youngsters to propagate the idea and go around the houses and explain to people, the importance of rainwater harvesting," says Ramakanth.

His group is now trying to plant shrubs along a one-and-a-half kilometer stretch of the railway line. It meant overcoming the red tape, but that was better than putting up with debris and stench.

Residents in the area have run from pillar to post over the last year to meet corporation officials and get themselves better facilities, but self-help is the best help and music has won the day.
