Quattrocchi tries hard to slip away

Buenos Aires: While India is pulling all plugs to get Italian middleman Ottavio Quattrocchi extradited from Argentina, the influential Italian is using all his money and influence with the Italian government to escape the extradition, making life difficult for the Indian investigators.

If his son Massimo's inclusion in the Italian prime minister's official delegation to India last month is not proof enough of his far-reaching influence, documents exclusively available with CNN-IBN clearly suggest that the Italian government is giving the Bofors scam accused all help in Argentina.

Even the public prosecutor supported his bail application, making the CBI desperate trying to find its own panel of lawyers to deal with the case.

It was only after the efforts of the Italian ambassador in Argentina, Stephano Ronca, that Quattrocchi got bail.

Ronca assured the courts that Quattrocchi would not leave the country and will appear before the courts whenever needed.

The document clearly says that the Italian middleman would not have got bail otherwise.

The document, that’s written in Spanish, shows that Quattrocchi's conditional release in Argentina was given after the court took his passport, $10,000 , an sssurance in writing from the Italian embassy and an address in Buenos Aires.

Though 68-year-old Quattrocchi's health was also taken into account, the court document says that bail is not usually given in such cases for persons who are wanted in another country

Questions are now being raised as to why Quattrocchi was not detained when he flew into Argentinian capital Buenos Aires from his hometown Milan in Italy in January.

He then crossed over to Brazil and was detained only when he was trying to get back into Argentina.

Sources say the detention itself was accidental, because Iguazu - where he was arrested - is a well-known drug-trafficking route.
