Mumbai: Society members of Bajaj Bhawan, the building that houses the Qatar Consulate in Mumbai are very upset. The consulate without seeking the society's approval destroyed a mural, which for years adorned the lobby of Bajaj Bhavan.
CCTV footage of labour employed show that the mural was brought down by the Qatar consulate. Angry society members now say that the value of the art work and other damages runs into crores.
“They destroyed my lobby, my mural, my ceiling. It is worth nothing less than Rs 2 crore,” General Secretary, Bajaj Bhavan owners society, Vinod Dalmia said.
The consulate had sought a no objection certificate (NOC) from the society on May 21 but demolished the art work the very next day without the NOC. According to the society, it is a blatant violation of BMC norms.
The debate has now turned into a security versus art issue. The consulate cites heightened security concerns as the reason for the demolition of the mural and the wall, but the society on the other hand says that the move destroys the aesthetics of the building, and sets a bad precedent.
Society members have refused to buy the consulate’s reasons. They have lodged a police complaint against the consulate and are also threatening legal action.
