Quake jolts Uttarakhand, north India gets the jitters

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: An earthquake measuring five on the Richter scale shook parts of north India early on Monday morning.

According to Met Department, the epicentre of the moderate-intensity quake lay in Gomukh near Gangotri, about 250 km north east of Uttaranchal’s capital Dehradun.

Reports from Uttarkashi said the tremors created cracks in some houses in the area where an earthquake in 1991 killed over 700 people.

However, no loss of life and property was reported.

The quake was recorded between 0434 hrs (IST) and 0443 am (IST).

The tremors were felt in Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Haridwar, Pithoragarh, Chamoli and some other parts of the state.

Mild tremors were also felt in parts of Delhi and UP’s Meerut.

Uttarakhand is one of the most seismically active places in India.
