New Delhi: A two-member CBI team on Wednesday left for Argentina — where Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi was arrested and then released on bail — to present the request for Quattrocchi's extradition.
The team consisting of Director of Prosecution and Superintendent of Police left for the Argenitinian capital Buenos Aires on Wednesday morning and are expected to preset the request through diplomatic channels tomorrow, the CBI said.
Although the Argentinian government has appointed Carlos Guilleremo Daneri as public prosecutor to represent India, the CBI, on its part, would appoint a local lawyer to assist Daneri.
Argentinian authorities had informed India through diplomatic channels that they would take a minimum 15 days to process the matter "before any further action is taken".
In wake of the criticism against it by Opposition parties, the CBI has armed itself with a non-bailable warrant of arrest against Quattrocchi.
The CBI approached the Tis Hazari court to help in the extradition process of Quattrocchi, who is allegedly the prime beneficiary in the Rs 64 crore Bofors arms deal.
Adding credence to the CBI claim that Quattrocchi is in no position to leave Argentina in spite of having been released on bail, the Argentine authorities on Tuesday informed the Indian Government that they had impounded the passport of 69-year-old Quattrocchi.
Quattrocchi has been barred by the Argentine authorities from leaving the country even though he has been released on bail after his arrest on the basis of an Interpol red-corner notice.
Quattrocchi, one of the key accused in the Bofors case, cannot leave the country now till his case is decided.
Quattrocchi was taken into custody by the Argentina Police on February 6 while on his way to catch a flight from Iguazu airport in Misiones province to Brazil. The detention came on the basis of an Interpol red-corner notice in his name, which has been pending for the last 11 years.
