New Delhi: When the Supreme Court first put a halt to reservation for OBCs in higher educational institutions in March, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was flooded with calls from his allies.
That time, he met most of his allies and calmed them down. But Monday's SC order has landed him in the same turmoil.
"The SC judgement shows that the future of 100 crore of people lies in the hands of just 2 or 3 men. This is an insult to democracy,” said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
Even the Left did not spare the Governmet. “Reservation is need of the hour. The government must show political will to make it happen,” said CPI leader D Raja.
Allies apart, it’s the OBC politicians who are gunning for the PM.
Accusing the Centre of failing to present a convincing argument before the Supreme Court, they are now even questioning the credentials of a pro-backward UPA.
“I told the PM not to pay attention to the judgement. It’s been given by a smaller bench. It is unconstitutional,” said NCP leader Sharad Pawar.
The PM has often said that in running a coalition government, he has listened to his allies. This time too, the PM had no choice, which is why the government approached the chief justice in a hurry.
