Muegeln (Germany): German police on Tuesday confirmed that eight Indian men were injured in a possible racist attack at a fair in eastern Germany.
Fourteen people, including the eight Indians, four of the attackers and two police officers were reported injured in the incident, which occurred at a small fair in Muegeln.
A mob of 50 Germans chased a group of Indians and beat them badly after a scuffle broke out shortly after midnight in a festival tent on Sunday.
Police say that the Indians attacked are mostly merchants who sell goods at open markets in the region.
They reportedly sought shelter in a pizza parlour run by an Indian. But the German mob kicked in the doors of the building and beat them up.
Around 70 police officers were called to bring the situation under control. There was no immediate report of arrests, but investigations are continuing in the incident.
Thirty nine-year-old Kulvir Singh, a market trader of Indian origin, who was injured in incident, says their intention was just to have “some fun”.
"We only went there to have some fun. Everybody was dancing in the tent and we wanted to take part. We did not want to cause any trouble. I've been on the market here for more than 10 years now and such a thing has never happened before,” said Singh.
