Rahman gets Space for his music

Reshil Charles, CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Who could be a better brand ambassador than music director A R Rahman when selling music?

The music maestro was in the capital to launch his special signature tune for satellite radio station WorldSpace.

CNN-IBN caught up with Rahman on the occasion.

Reshil Charles: Mr Rahman, this tune that you have taken out for WorldSpace is also going to be used in an advertisement for them. Does it more or less take you back to your good old jingle days?

A R Rahman: I think it is a nice thing to have a radio which does not have any commercial but pure music. It also has different kinds of music to select from.

Reshil Charles: How does this whole brand ambassador concept work? What do you expect out of the company concerned and what do you get from them in return?

A R Rahman: I have done a commercial for a phone company and WorldSpace is the next one I am doing. I am selective about what product I endorse. I felt that the product was important and I love the product, so I got in touch with it. It also features me as myself.

Reshil Charles: Over the years, your work has been what has made A R Rahman. But you have also composed music which has not been up to the expectations that people have reviews on. How do you select a project?

A R Rahman: It is something that has to be balanced, because you can get into a rut, where you become a gamble, people gamble for you and bet on you. I do not want to get into that. I want to become a pure artist who can select his own thing. I want to reach out to the public and at the same time to give and take in.

Reshil Charles: Do you think that you can let yourself more loose in a musical than in a film?

A R Rahman: There is longevity in whatever we do on stage because it grows. Bombay Dreams was done four years back and it went to Broadway and now it is going on tour, the North American tour in particular. It is also going to come to the Middle East and far East. It keeps growing and because of that it becomes a cult.

Reshil Charles: Is there another side of A R Rahman left to see? Is there something lined up which is going to be completely different from what you have ever done?

A R Rahman: There is always something to do if you keep looking for something to do. There is something coming up as I am starting a label, which hopefully will try to cash on the alternative side of music.
