New Delhi: While A R Rahman has certainly done India proud with his three nominations at the Oscars, the voices behind the tracks that got him the nominations also deserve full credit.
MIA as she's popularly known, is the daughter of a Sri Lankan rebel who grew up meeting her farther in restriction due to his being on the army hit list.
It was a combination of that and other experiences growing up in war torn places like Jaffna that influenced a big part of UK born Sri Lankan singer Maya Arupragasam's reggae ton and dancehall style of expression. So when you hear her drop rhymes on the track 'O Saya' from Slumdog millionaire, you could more or less confirm Rahman's ability to spot and use talent from sometimes the most unpredictable of sources.
She shares the Oscar nomination with him for best original song for 'O Saya' and irrespective of the outcome, will be an example for many who come from the expressive genre!
‘Jai Ho’ may be the seasoned voice of Sukhwinder Singh, that in fact Rahman had first used for the much acclaimed track Chaiya Chaiya from Dil Se but its outbursts of Jai Ho have reached the ears of even the Oscar jury that has nominated the track under the best original song category.
While Sukhwinder’s textured vocals lead on the track, Chennai based Tanvi Shah comes in on the middle layers with an energizing filler. Even though the nomination along with Rahman has not gone to them but to lyricist Gulzar, Tanvi has only Rahman to thank for bringing out a personal recognition irrespective.
While many other like Sonu Nigam, rapper Blazee, Alka Yagnik, Alisha Chinai all share spaces in the soundtrack, it will essentially be Rahman that will go up on that stage if the Oscar comes calling.
Irrespective, almost anyone associated with the album can be rest assured that from here on, whether they've worked with the maestro before or not, their slumdog contribution will pave a future for them that's stands securer than ever before.
