New Delhi: Actors Rahul Bose and Nandita Das have teamed up for cinematographer-turned-director, Santosh Sivan's debut English film, Before the Rains.
Set in 1937 Kerala, the film has the country's growing nationalist movement as the backdrop to its story of an illicit affair and one man's friendship with a British road builder.
Linus Roach plays Henry Moores, an English businessman, who enlists the help of a local, TK, played by Bose, to build a road for the feasibility of his plan to start a spice plantation at a particular site.
However, when Henry's relationship with a married woman is discovered, TK faces a dilemma.
Rahul Bose says, "What's the personal issue? A friend on one hand, and on the other hand loyalty to your village. Loyalty to Moore or customs of his village. So TK's character has at one point in time to choose between the two."
Having done the rounds of the festival circuit, Before the Rains now opens in the US on May 9.
